Big Daddy Mudbug
Meet "Big Daddy Mudbug". This freshwater crustacean, a relative of the lobster, is colloquially called a mudbug. It is also known as a crayfish, crawfish or crawdad. The name "mudbug" is attributed to its preference of habitat. When water is low and the crayfish's mudflat is exposed, it digs a burrow down to the water level, constantly deepening the burrow as the waters recede; thus, causing a ring of marble-shaped pellets of mud about the entrance. I photographed "Big Daddy Mudbug" one morning as he was attempting to enter my carport. Evidently, the hard rain the night before had flushed him out of his burrow and he was seeking a new home.
